چکیده
Abstract Ammonia nitrogen management is a recurrent problem in intensive livestock areas. Struvite precipitation stands as mature technology to recover ammonia and prevent associated environmental problems. However, the feasibility of struvite from pig manure limited by reagents cost. This research aimed optimise formulation stabilizing agent (SA) synthesised using an industrial low-grade MgO by-product (LG-MgO) phosphoric acid for efficient TAN recovery via precipitation. Experimental results showed that H3PO4/LG-MgO ratio controls magnesium phosphate mineral phase SA (bobierrite and/or newberyite). Newberyite-rich highest removal efficiency (66–73%) compared formed mixture newberyite bobierrite (51–59%) (26%). Particle size reduction LG-MgO did not improve SA's efficiency, although XRD patterns precipitates experiments contained some unreacted newberyite. The economic analysis higher reactivity formulated ratios compensated reagent costs. with 0.98 most economical treatment cost, which was estimated at 7.5 € per kg manure. Finally, optimum successfully 200-L pilot plant, capacity only 10% lower than one lab-scale.

Phosphorus Recovery from Animal Manures using Optimized Struvite Precipitation
The over-application of phosphorus, as manure by animal feeding operations, is a threat to surface water quality. Concentration of animal feeding operations and over application of manures to cropland has lead to a build-up of phosphorus on many farms (Greaves et al., 1999). Relative to crop needs, manure slurries contain higher levels of phosphorus than nitrogen. When manure is applied to meet...
متن کاملAmmonium recovery from biocatalytic calcification reactor effluent by struvite precipitation
Chemical precipitation is a suitable method for the recovery and removal of ammonium in water and a fertilizer known as MAP (magnesium ammonium phosphate; MgNH4PO4.6H2O; struvite) is obtained. Additionally, the advantage of this method is that environmental conditions do not have any effect compared to biological methods. In this study, the recovery of ammonium (Cmean=348 mg NH4 /L ± 38.1; n=25...
متن کاملStruvite precipitation potential for nutrient recovery from anaerobically treated wastes.
Geochemical equilibrium speciation modeling was used to determine optimum conditions for precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate, or struvite, for the recovery of nutrients from anaerobically digested wastes. Despite a wide range of pH values with the potential to precipitate struvite, the optimum pH was determined to be 9.0. Bench experiments conducted on effluent from an anaerobic seque...
متن کاملPretreated magnesite as a source of low-cost magnesium for producing struvite from urine in Nepal.
Struvite is a solid phosphorus fertilizer that can be recovered easily from source-separated urine by dosing it with a soluble form of magnesium. The process is simple and low-cost, however, previous studies have shown that the cost of magnesium in low-income countries is crucial to the viability and implementation of struvite precipitation. Literature has proposed producing inexpensive magnesi...
متن کاملKinetics of struvite precipitation: effect of the magnesium dose on induction times and precipitation rates.
The presence of white deposits in specific areas of wastewater treatment plants is generally the consequence of the spontaneous formation of a mineral called struvite. Struvite forms when the levels of phosphate, ammonium and magnesium naturally available in wastewater effluents reach a minimum molar ratio 1:1:1 under specific conditions of pH, temperature and mixing energy. Originally regarded...
